How They Did It | Smile Stories
A Clinic Built From Frustration, Not Fortune
The feature on Smile Stories in Private Dentistry Magazine gives an honest look at what happens when two dentists finally decide they will no longer tolerate the outdated, reactive and exhausting version of dentistry most of us were raised in.
Gareth Edwards and Zak Kara did not set out to build a trendy clinic. They set out to build a clinic that made sense. After years of working in practices where the diary dictated the day, emergencies derailed everything and the environment felt stuck in a time warp, they wanted to create something calmer, clearer and more human.
They took over a modest three-surgery practice in Bournemouth and rebuilt the experience from the ground up. Not by buying shiny new equipment or chasing cosmetic trends, but by rethinking the fundamentals: how people are welcomed, how conversations happen, how treatment is explained and how the day flows for the clinician.
The result was Smile Stories.
Design That Supports Dentistry, Not Distracts From It
The Private Dentistry Magazine piece highlights the clinic’s warm, relaxed design, which looks more like a boutique coffee shop than a high street dental practice. This was intentional. Gareth and Zak recognised that physical space affects behaviour. When people feel calm, open and welcomed, they communicate better, accept treatment more easily and feel genuinely looked after.
Removing the waiting room concept was a turning point. Clients are greeted, offered a drink, and treated like humans, not numbers on a list. It sounds simple, but very few practices are built this way, and the impact on the client journey is immediate.
A Clear Philosophy That Clients Instinctively Understand
What really differentiates Smile Stories is their philosophy of total mouth health. They shifted away from the transactional cycle of check ups, quick fixes and recurring emergencies. Instead, they prioritised long term planning, comprehensive care and conversations that help clients understand what is actually happening in their mouths.
This is the same philosophical backbone that led to the creation of Dental Kitchen. Systems drive outcomes. Clarity drives confidence. When expectations are set early and consistently, clients become easier to work with, not harder.
Proof That a Better Model Works
Smile Stories has since grown into a five-room clinic attracting clients from all over the country. They have won multiple awards, including Best Practice in the South West and Wales in only their second year of opening.
For any principal dentist reading this, the message is simple. Smile Stories is proof that when the model is right, dentistry becomes easier, more profitable and far more fulfilling. It is living evidence that you do not need hype or shortcuts. You need structure, clarity and a system that supports the dentistry you were trained to deliver.
And that is exactly what Dental Kitchen now teaches.
