Dr Gareth Edwards on Two Reds Are Better Than One: Systems, Culture and the Smile Stories Philosophy

December 30, 20252 min read

In a standout episode of the 2 Reds Are Better Than One, Dr Gareth Edwards shares the journey that shaped Smile Stories into one of the most modern, patient centred practices in the UK. His story blends experience, travel, psychology and confident decision making, which now underpin The Dental Kitchen philosophy and the 500K Treatment Room philosophy.

From Manchester to the World: A Non Traditional Path

After graduating in 2012, Dr Gareth Edwards spent five years treating patients in Middleton, North Manchester. Feeling limited by the traditional dental model, he took an 18 month break to travel through Asia and South America. This time was not only about seeing the world, but also about reading, studying and absorbing ideas from industries entirely outside dentistry.

Those lessons would later become core ingredients of Smile Stories.

Building Smile Stories: Nothing Like Your Old Dentist

When Dr Edwards returned to Bournemouth in 2019, he partnered with Zak Kara, and their shared approach quickly outgrew the three surgery practice they first acquired. They built a purpose designed clinic focused on patient experience, digital workflows and meaningful human connection.

In the episode, Dr Edwards explains how Smile Stories was intentionally designed around:

  • lifelong patient relationships

  • immersive, welcoming environments

  • complete digital integration

  • a team culture that supports every step of the patient journey

Learning from Outside Dentistry

Dr Edwards and Zak borrow ideas from hospitality, retail, behavioural psychology and modern customer experience brands. Their Triangle Formula ensures every team member plays an active role at each stage of the patient journey, creating consistency that patients can feel.

Risk, Growth and a High Performance Team

Their approach to risk is calculated and deliberate. The result is a clinic that has:

  • built a workplace people genuinely want to come to

  • created joy moments, including end of treatment celebrations

  • developed personalised marketing for every new patient

  • achieved 750+ five star Google reviews

Dr Edwards also shares their Peak End Rule, identifying the ideal time and method for capturing reviews that patients genuinely want to leave.

The systems, language and choreography Dr Gareth Edwards discusses are the same foundations that drive a treatment room generating £8–10k per week.
